On this day in 1935, beer went on sale in cans and ballpark brawls became less dangerous, especially when pull-tabs replaced pointy can punches. Canning beer wasn't easy, though. First they had to figure out how to keep it from eating through the can ... and then how to make the mountains turn blue when it got cold.

Ditch New Year's Resolutions Day.

Yes! We hereby call quits on all of it — saying no to cookie dough ice cream; folding clothes right from the dryer; getting to work earlier; smiling nicely at that guy at the gym who sings aloud to his iPod. As of today, we're done with it all.

We just can't grow them.

It's National Fruitcake Day

Happily, you don't have to eat it to celebrate it.

For years, the Winkles of Utica, NY have used their heirloom fruitcake as a festive doorstop. The Olafsonsdottirs of Bemidji, MN punt, pass and kick theirs in holiday football scrimmages. Inspired by Real Simple magazine, Lily Brofman of Venice, CA crafted hers into a candelabra, but the rum ignited and set her condo on fire.

When Alonti gets creative with food, we choose fab over function. So the new empanadas, stuffed meatloaf and apple crumble on our holiday menu at Alonti.com are: a) delicious and b) made fresh every day. Sort of not even remotely like fruitcake.

Sounds like stuff we used to send off for from back page ads in Batman comics: Magical Sea Stallions that were actually tiny shrimp. In December 1914, nobody wanted Thousand Wonder Builders. But in 1915, Tinker Toys flew off the shelves.

Before settling on Tiny Tim, Dickens considered Puny Pete, Little Larry and Small Sam as names for the pint-sized protagonist in A Christmas Carol. We're glad he chose Tiny Tim; a tale about Little Larry doesn't have the ring of a holiday classic.

Quit putting candles on Christmas trees.

On this day in 1879, Edison patented the light bulb. In 1895, Ralph E. Morris figured out that miniaturizing Edison's bulbs to put on a tree instead of candles cut the risk of burning down the house by a factor of one zillion. But it took years for his idea to catch on; people worried that electric light strings were a fire hazard. Okay ...

You have no idea.

When the Portuguese introduced a small guitar to them, Hawaiians gave it a name meaning "jumping fleas," since that's how a player's fingers looked plucking the strings. On the other hand the Portuguese took "barbeque" right from Caribbean dialects, maybe thinking that "sacred fire pit" wouldn't go over well back home.

It's the 197th anniversary of the Francis Scott Key poem that gave us the words to our national anthem. Certain 21st century singers might wish for simpler wording but we think "at the twilight's last gleaming ... were so gallantly streaming," is a far more elegant rhyme scheme than "were still around at sundown."
